Emergency crews launched a major rescue operation Friday morning after a trench reportedly collapsed at an earthworks site in Crossnacreevy, County Down, leaving people trapped underground.

The incident was reported along Ballygowan Road shortly before 11 a.m. on October 2, 2026, bringing multiple emergency agencies and specialist rescue teams to the area.

Specialist Crews at the Scene

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service deployed three ambulances, specialist personnel, and two Hazardous Area Response Teams to support the operation.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service also sent crews and specialist equipment from Knock, Carryduff, and Cadogan stations. Firefighters were working to stabilize the collapsed excavation and carry out careful shoring operations while attempting to reach those believed to be trapped.

An Air Ambulance NI helicopter was initially dispatched as part of the emergency response.

Because of the unstable ground, rescuers have been required to work carefully around the damaged trench to reduce the risk of further collapse.

Ballygowan Road Closed

The Police Service of Northern Ireland closed Ballygowan Road in the area and introduced diversions while emergency personnel continued working at the scene.

Translink also confirmed diversions affecting local Ulsterbus services, including routes 512 and 12. Services were redirected through Manse Road and Lisnabreeny Road, with some stops around Roselawn and Crossnacreevy bypassed.

Drivers have been advised to avoid the area where possible.

Safety Investigation Underway

Alongside the rescue response, the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland has attended the site to examine the circumstances surrounding the excavation.

Inspectors are expected to consider issues including ground stability, excavation conditions, and workplace safety procedures as the emergency operation continues.

Police and other authorities have secured the area while the rescue effort remains the immediate priority.

Condition of Those Trapped

Authorities had not publicly confirmed the identities of the people believed to be trapped or provided verified information about their medical condition.

The number of people affected and the eventual outcome of the rescue operation therefore remain subject to official updates.

Residents in Crossnacreevy, Carryduff, and surrounding parts of East Belfast have been watching the emergency response as specialist teams continue coordinating at the scene.

Further information is expected from the police and emergency services as the operation develops.
